Cutler Bay's Gateway to the Bay and Beyond
If you live in Cutler Bay and you have a boat — or if you are thinking about buying a home here and want to understand what waterfront access really means — Black Point Park and Marina is the conversation you need to have.
Black Point sits at the southern end of Cutler Bay on the edge of Biscayne Bay — one of the most important and beautiful bodies of water in all of Florida. From its ten boat launch lanes you can be on open bay water in minutes. From there it is a straight shot south to Biscayne National Park's living coral reefs, or further south to the Florida Keys. There is no better gateway to South Florida's most extraordinary boating waters.
I have lived in Cutler Bay for twenty-one years. Black Point is part of the fabric of this community — a place where locals gather, where weekends happen, where the salt air hits you the moment you arrive and reminds you exactly why you chose to live here.
What You Can Do at Black Point
Boating — The Premier Boat Launch in South Miami-Dade
Black Point's boat launch is one of the busiest and best-equipped in all of Miami-Dade County. Ten launch lanes handle everything from small fishing skiffs to large offshore boats, with 128 vehicle-and-trailer parking spaces that fill up fast on weekend mornings. The launch fee is approximately $20 per day paid via a mobile app — no cash required.
The marina offers wet slip rentals for boaters who want permanent dock access, along with fuel service, a bait and tackle shop, and a courtesy dock for temporary tie-up. The marina is open 24 hours — unusual for a public facility and enormously convenient for boaters who want early morning departures before the summer heat and afternoon storms build.
Fishing — One of South Florida's Best Public Fishing Spots
Black Point's 1.5-mile jetty extending into Biscayne Bay is one of the most productive public fishing spots in all of South Miami-Dade. Anglers regularly pull snook, tarpon, permit, snapper, and a variety of other species from the jetty — particularly in the early morning hours and during tidal changes when fish activity peaks. The jetty is free to use and accessible to anyone who walks into the park.
The bay waters immediately off Black Point are also excellent for kayak fishing, with access to mangrove shorelines and grass flats that hold bonefish, permit, redfish, and snook. Local guides frequently launch from Black Point for guided bay fishing trips.
Black Point Ocean Grill — Waterfront Dining with Live Music
Black Point Ocean Grill is one of the best-kept secrets in South Miami-Dade dining — a dockside restaurant and bar with outdoor seating overlooking the marina and Biscayne Bay beyond. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily with a casual menu focused on seafood and South Florida comfort food. On weekends the Ocean Grill hosts live music creating one of the most genuinely enjoyable outdoor dining atmospheres in the entire area.
There is something about watching boats come and go while eating stone crab claws with a cold beer and live music in the background that captures exactly what South Florida living is supposed to feel like. Black Point Ocean Grill delivers that consistently.
Trails, Picnic Areas, and Wildlife
Beyond the marina Black Point Park offers bikeways and jogging trails through a South Florida natural landscape with exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. The park's location at the edge of Biscayne Bay creates a natural corridor for birds — ospreys, pelicans, herons, egrets, and roseate spoonbills are regularly spotted. Manatees are frequently seen in the marina basin particularly in the cooler months between November and April.
The large picnic pavilion and grill area makes Black Point a popular destination for family gatherings and community events — particularly on weekends when the combination of bay views, boat watching, wildlife, and the Ocean Grill creates an atmosphere unlike anything else available in the area.
The Weekend Scene — A South Florida Institution
If you have never witnessed the Black Point boat ramp on a busy Saturday morning — it is something worth seeing even if you do not own a boat. The combination of serious offshore fishermen launching before dawn, recreational boaters heading out for day trips to the Keys, local families picnicking along the bay, and the steady flow of activity at the Ocean Grill creates a scene that is quintessentially South Florida.
Local boating enthusiasts have made Black Point famous on social media for its occasionally chaotic but endlessly entertaining boat ramp activity — particularly on weekends when inexperienced boaters attempt launches that more experienced hands handle in seconds. It is genuinely entertaining viewing.
What Black Point Means for Cutler Bay Real Estate
When buyers ask me what makes Cutler Bay worth the premium over comparable inland communities — I mention several things. The Old Cutler Road canopy. The A-rated schools. The Cutler Cay waterways. Biscayne National Park ten minutes away.
And Black Point Marina.
The ability to launch your boat from a world-class facility and be fishing in Biscayne National Park within fifteen minutes — or heading to the Florida Keys for a day trip — is not a minor lifestyle amenity. It is the kind of access that people pay dramatically more for in communities like Coconut Grove or Key Biscayne. In Cutler Bay you get it at a fraction of the price.

• The jetty is best fished at dawn and dusk during tidal changes.
